Residential Plumbing FAQ’s
This is a question we get frequently here at We Care. One of the main reasons for a knocking / rumbling sound in a water heater is due to the buildup of sediment over time. When sediment builds up in your water heater’s tank it can not only create a significant noise disturbance but also can cause the heater to operate at less than peak efficiency. In some cases, we can simply flush the tank to eliminate the noise, but in many instances, it is more cost effective to get a newer, more energy efficient model.
If your kitchen drains are slowing the pace at which they drain you can try utilizing a plunger to free up any light clogging that may be occurring. If this does not work it may be time to remove he trap and see if you can remove any visible debris. If this does not work it may be time to call a professional plumber to help. While many people do utilize liquid drain cleaners we recommend staying away from these types of products unless you follow the instructions carefully and are comfortable doing so.
One of the most common reasons we see for a sharp increase in water bills is leaking toilets. The best way to check for this is to see if water is overflowing into the overflow pipe when you look into the fresh water tank itself. If the toilets do not appear to be leaking there could be a more serious problem with leaky pipes that will need to be diagnosed by a professional.
Groaning plumbing in a home can often mean that the buffer of air has been lost within your lines. This can be fixed in many cases by turning off the main water supply to the home, then turning on all faucets and water outlets in the home. Once you turn the water supply back on you can turn off the faucets one-by-one to remedy the problem. If this does not work you may want to call a professional sooner than later.
Many water heater adjustments can be found on the front of the water heater itself. It is common for these knobs to get bumped while moving items in the garage, attic, etc. First you should check to see if this adjustment has been inadvertently turned up, if so reset it to see if this resolves the issue. If not it is a good idea to get a professional out to make sure it is not a sign of a more serious problem.
It is common for debris and food waste to build up in garbage disposals which can lead to foul odors. To eliminate this you can often simply add some ice and an aromatic liquid into the disposal. Running the garbage disposal with ice and an aromatic agent can often lead to the elimination of odors. Always be sure to utilize safe best practices when operating the disposal.
If you suspect that roots have gotten into your drain system the time to act is now. When roots enter drainage systems they continue to grow toward the source of water and are likely to create a complete blockage. Treating root issues seriously and quickly can help save homeowners from even costlier repairs down the line.
